The Armed Man (Jenkins) is an anti-war composition dealing with the build up and aftermath of war and the hope for a better future.

Easily recognized as Jenkins by similarities in parts to his Adiemus of TV advert fame, it is based on the Catholic Mass combined with other sources including the Imam’s Call to Prayers (Adhan), and is one of his most popular works, regularly performed by professional and amateur musicians.

Commissioned by The Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium celebrations to mark the museum’s move from London to Leeds, it was premiered at The Royal Albert Hall in April 2000 with Julian Lloyd Webber as solo cellist.

In an age where war continues, and where the US is looking to increase spending on weapons, we need to pause and be nourished in the ways of peace. This lovely piece of music is good for that.

St Mary’s Church, known as St Mary’s in the Baum, is a Grade 1 listed beauty, with beautiful carvings by Comper. It will be great venue for the performance.

Entry fee: Tickets £6 (£3 students)
