Event: Mass to commemorate the Battle of Passchendaele

Parishioners from across the Diocese of Salford will gather this week for a special service to be held on the centenary of the end of the battle of Passchendaele, 10th November.
This battle, which took place from the 31 July – 10 November 1917, was one of the most horrific of the First World War and many of the soldiers who fought and died came from the regiments based across the Diocese of Salford. Salford Cathedral already hosts a War Memorial Chapel, situated in the north transept of the cathedral, where the names and initials of 663 men who died during the War are inscribed on eight white marble tablets.
The Rt Rev John Arnold, Bishop of Salford lent his support to the commemoration saying: "A hundred years ago thousands of men gave their lives in one of the most horrific battles of the First World War.
"It is right that we remember those who died in this devastating conflict, but also to reflect on their legacy of reconciliation. We should take this opportunity to pledge to stand together against hatred and prejudice in all its forms."
After the Mass, a special exhibition will be launched, which is dedicated to the approximate 8,000 men from the Diocese of Salford who sacrificed their lives during the Great War. The exhibition will run until November 2018.
The event takes place on Friday 10 November at 7.30pm St John’s Cathedral, Salford. All are welcome to join the commemoration.
