Theo Peppe going head-to-head to become the Best British takeaway in the North West

Date published: 11 October 2016

Ten restaurants, including Theo Peppe in Rochdale, are in the running to be crowned the Best Takeaway in the North West at the 2016 British Takeaway Awards (BTAs).

The BTAs - which are run in association with Just Eat, the world’s leading marketplace for online food delivery - are about celebrating the diverse range of cuisines and rewarding the amazing contribution a nation of takeaway owners make to both their local communities and the UK economy.

Over the last month thousands of food fans in the North West have been voting online and via post for their favourite takeaway.

In no particular order, the ten restaurants that received the most nominations from their customers are:

  • Theo Peppe in Rochdale, Greater Manchester (Italian/Greek) - 2015 finalist
  • Sun Wah in Birkenhead, Merseyside (Chinese) - 2015 finalist
  • Grilled Hotspot in Radcliffe, Manchester (Burger/Kebab)
  • 23rd Street Pizza in Fallowfield, Manchester (Pizza)
  • Brunch in Prescot, Merseyside (Breakfast/Sandwiches) - 2015 winner
  • Cinnamon Tree in Rossendale, Lancashire (Indian)
  • Tuk Tuk in Preston, Lancashire (Indian)
  • Mint in Denton, Greater Manchester (Indian)
  • Little Mary’s Cafe in Prescot, Merseyside (Breakfast/Sandwiches)
  • Mughli Charcoal Pit in Fallowfield, Manchester (Indian)

The next stage of the awards has now launched. The general public has until 24 October 2016 to visit the website www.thebtas.co.uk and vote for which one of the 10 local takeaways they think has what it takes to be the best in in the North West.

The top five takeaways in the North West that receive the most votes across the two voting periods will make it to the star-studded national awards ceremony.

The British Takeaway Awards 2016 will take place on 5 December at The Savoy in London, where the most celebrated names in British takeaway food will come together to celebrate the success of Britain’s best independent takeaway businesses.

In total, 14 awards will be presented. Each of the 13 regional winners will receive £1,000 and free sign up to Just Eat, or their sign-up fee returned if they are already a partner. But one of the 13 will be extra lucky as they will win the coveted award for Best British Takeaway in Britain and also receive a cheque for £5,000.

The 2015 winner of the first ever Best British Takeaway Award for the North West was the traditional British cafe BRUNCH in Prescot. Since winning the award, the Greenes Road cafe has seen a huge impact on business, which has seen turnover double and staff increase from six to nine, including two new drivers to help cope with increased orders for home deliveries, which can number 100 per week - up 80% since before the award win.

Graham Corfield, UK Managing Director of Just Eat, said: “The British Takeaway Awards are all about recognising and rewarding the diversity and excellence of the nation’s takeaway industry. Making it to the top ten best takeaways restaurants in the North West is a great achievement as it means their customers think they are providing great food and excellent customer service.”
