Royal seal of approval for Rochdale business

Date published: 29 July 2010

A Rochdale business, which produces heat and steam generation equipment for companies around the globe, has been honoured at a Buckingham Palace reception after receiving a top business award.

Dunphy Combustion Ltd in Queensway was one of six North West companies to receive a Queen’s Award for Enterprise 2010 to mark their outstanding success in technological innovation.

They joined representatives from 143 thriving businesses from all corners of the UK, all winners of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise, for their achievements in International Trade, Innovation or Sustainable Development.

Dunphy Chairman, Malcolm Dunphy MBE, said: “As part of the Queen’s award, we are having a formal presentation in the factory when the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester will visit us and meet all the staff. This is a wonderful opportunity for our engineers and support staff to see the practical benefits of their individual design, manufacturing and administrative skills.”

Established in 1964, the business, which is family owned and managed, supplies industrial burners which provide heat for a vast range of industries, including hospitals, universities, water treatment sites and hotels.

The company was given the innovation award after it produced new burners which bring nitrous oxide levels down to a minimum and also lead to reduced electricity running costs and noise.

Mr Dunphy added: “Since winning this award, we have had a marked increase in enquiries from potential customers and we are hoping that the publicity will encourage many more youngsters to consider engineering and manufacturing as a worthwhile and rewarding a career option.”

Joanna Hill, head of the Queen’s Awards Office, said: “It was great to see Dunphy Combustion Ltd honoured at Buckingham Palace for their hard work and for achieving a Queen’s Award for Innovation. These awards are not given lightly - all the winners have shown they are amongst the very best in their own industry, and the whole country. This is a fantastic accolade which underlines the essential role of enterprise and business in our economy. I warmly congratulate Dunphy Combustion Ltd for this recognition and I wish them the very best for the future.”

Since the prestigious awards were announced on The Queen’s Birthday, 21 April, winners have been making the most of their unique status in the marketplace, where winning the award brings acknowledgment of quality of products and services by customers and competitors alike.

Winners can also add The Queen’s Award logo to all their branding and company literature to set them apart from the rest, while many have already enjoyed a memorable day with their workforce to mark the separate presentation of their award at their company premises.
