Richard Tang plants tree in support of World Earth Day 2014

Date published: 22 April 2014

Employees at Rochdale based Zen Internet have been supporting World Earth Day with an array of eco-friendly activities.

Zen’s World Earth Day, organised by the company’s Going Greener team, was supported by Richard Tang, Zen’s Managing Director, commemorating the day by planting a Tibetan cherry tree in the grounds of the company’s headquarters.

Every year on April 22, over a billion people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day. People plant trees and clean up their communities all on behalf of the environment. Like Earth Days of the past, Earth Day 2014 will focus on the unique environmental challenges of our time. As the world’s population migrates to cities, and as the bleak reality of climate change becomes increasingly clear, the need to create sustainable communities is more important than ever.

For the rest of the day enthusiastic Zen employees got involved by sporting something green or donning fancy dress including creating recycled hats. The Zen ‘Bake Off’ was one of the highlights, together with the Catering team who were selling ‘Green cakes’, with all donations going to The Christie, Zen’s chosen charity.

A group of eager employees including the Senior Management Team, have been picking up litter in the local Rochdale area and volunteers were invited to help get Zen’s grounds ready for Rochdale in Bloom. Last year Zen won Gold Award for Best Retail - Commercial or Business Park, Overall Winner for Best Retail - Commercial or Business Park and Discretionary Award for Best Commercial effort at the North West in Bloom awards 2013. Britain in Bloom is one of the longest running and well known environmental competitions in the UK.

Zen is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and has implemented a number of measures to support this. There are extensive recycling facilities including food waste through the company, an on-going project to replace high wattage light bulbs with LEDs, a Ride to Work scheme and sensor lighting in its Data Centre.
Zen’s Data Centre also includes two state of the art Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supplies (DRUPS) that provide a greener standby power solution and last year Zen achieved Participant status in the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centre energy efficiency. Zen is also using its ISO 14001 certification framework to continually improve its energy efficiency and reduce its environmental impact.

“The day was an opportunity for everyone to get involved in some way. Zen is committed to reducing its impact on the environment and we are continually improving our processes to become a ‘greener’ business. We will also be continuing our fundraising efforts throughout this year for The Christie,” said Caroline Taylor, HR Director.
