High Street Foundation

The River Roch being uncovered in the town centre, historical advertising and town centre updates were discussed at the latest Rochdale High Street Foundation meeting.

The meeting opened with an update regarding the River Roch project. Laura Hodson and Tony Callaghan from Rochdale Council gave the presentation and updated those in attendance on the river reopening.

The main elements of the project include the creation of three new openings of the river along the Butts. The project will also restore the historic, multiphase arch bridge at the bottom of Yorkshire Street and will restore the river as an attractive wildlife corridor.

A presentation regarding historical advertising was given by Mathilde Guerin from Rochdale Council, highlighting historical advertising as a way of revitalising the town centre. The presentation showed off adverts painted on the side of the Pioneers Museum and along Bulls Brow. Both adverts were recently restored and repainted and have "significantly improved the environment and public realm".

It is understood that there are more locations viewed as suitable for historical adverts around the town centre. Proposed places include Hunters Lane, the
side of the Regal Moon, Fashion Corner House and at key locations near the Transport Interchange.

It is estimated that the scheme could cost anywhere between £5,000 and £10,000 but funding to deliver the scheme is currently not available. The
council is however set to explore funding options over the coming months, including external grants and possible contributions from town centre businesses.

Mark Robinson, Head of Planning at Rochdale Council, said: “The response we’ve had to the two historical adverts we’ve already installed has been very positive, so we’re keen to build on this and move forward with a project which really is unique in Greater Manchester. This scheme will not only enhance Rochdale’s strong heritage offer, but it will connect visitors and residents to our town’s great history.”

Updates regarding each town centre were then presented.

Rochdale town centre update included information regarding the tram and demolition works, the announcement of the Feel Good Festival being held on Friday 29 and Saturday 30 August and a town centre offices prospectus being created.

The update for Middleton gave information about the launch of the teenage market and cinema events in Middleton Arena.

The 1940s day will return to Heywood on Saturday 28 June and a military parade will be held on Sunday 24 August to commemorate World War 1.

The Tour De France coming to Rochdale in July: visitor pocket guides for each township are being produced and a "cultural briefing event" for businesses is being held on Tuesday 13 May at Belle Vista.

Frances Fielding from Rochdale Council said: “The meeting went really well. We had another good turn out with lots of discussion and enthusiasm. It is important that businesses have a forum where they can put forward their ideas/issues and have their voices heard and ultimately action taken.”
