Wilko to stay in the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre

Date published: 16 April 2015

Wilko’s has agreed to stay in the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre and has signed a new three year lease.

The store, which is currently trading from two floors, will move to trading from the lower floor only.

It was announced in August 2014 that the high street chain had decided to leave the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre due to the perception of Rochdale Town Centre, but discussions were taking place as the Wheatsheaf Centre’s transformation continued.

Oliver Kaufman from Fairacre Property, said: “Wilko’s has agreed a new three year deal and at the minute we are in legal. We are looking forward to working with Rochdale Council and RDA to revitalise the Wheatsheaf Centre as part of the new scheme.”

The new deal by Wilko’s comes at a time when Rochdale and the Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre are improving.

The new Baillie Street entrance to the Centre is well underway, providing new lifts and escalators to make access to the centre and the other side of the town easier. The new entrance will be the gateway to Rochdale’s regeneration zone, as the centre of gravity in the town shifts towards Rochdale's new transport links, as well as 450 surface level car parking spaces surrounding the Wheatsheaf.
