Landlords take the tax-friendly course

The council is helping local landlords to make a friend in hard times - the taxman.

Rochdale Borough Council's Landlord Accreditation Scheme is arranging a free seminar for landlords on the taxes they need to pay.

"Tax liabilities are a key factor for landlords trying to get the most from their property investment in these difficult times.

"The seminar will cover how to calculate income tax and how to legally reduce this figure, including what counts as taxable and non-taxable expenditure," said Paul Beardmore, Head of Rochdale Borough Council's Strategic Housing Service.

The training will be provided by Tenon Group PLC, one of the UK's largest accountant and business advice firms.

The seminar will be held on Wednesday 30 April 2008, from 6.00pm to 8.00pm at the Broadfield Hotel, Knightingale Suite, Sparrow Hill, Rochdale. Any interested landlords should phone the Accreditation Scheme on 01706 926673/926623.

The seminar will cover:

• The main tax liabilities for a landlord 
• Information they need to provide for tax purposes 
• When information should be provided to the Inland Revenue 
• How to calculate income tax 
• How to legally reduce this figure 
• What can be claimed as taxable and non-taxable expenditure 
• The basics on Capital Gains and Inheritance Tax
