Rochdale Hornets 76 - 4 University of Gloucestershire All Golds

Date published: 16 March 2014

Hornets romped to victory against the University of Gloucestershire All Golds in their Challenge Cup fixture at Spotland with hat tricks from Samoan Sam Te'o and Gaz Langley.

The gulf in class was apparent right from the kick off and within quarter of an hour the game was over as a contest and all that remained was just how big the margin of victory would be - All Golds were reduced to appealing to each other to prevent a record score line early in the second half.

Within minutes of the kick off, Hornets were off to a great start when Ryan Millard delivered a superb pass to a rampaging Baines to open the scoring. Crook added the extras

Good hands across the field from Hornets saw the returning Dave Llewelyn draw his opponent before passing to put Gaz Langley in at the corner. Crook again successful with the conversion.

Next over the line, in what was already becoming a procession, was Baines for his second after Millard and Ratu made the yards and went close. Crook with the two.

With under twenty minutes on the clock, Hornets were out of sight of All Golds when Samoan Sam Te'o got his first try for Hornets out on the touch line. Crook missed for the first time in the game with his conversion attempt.

Hornets territorial domination continued and they had All Golds constantly pinned inside their half. Inevitably the constant pressure paid off when good interplay saw Hornets captain Wayne English put Sam Te'o in for his second try. Crook missed again.

It was veteran Wayne English, his legs belying his years, who supplied the pass that set up Ryan Millard to ghost in unopposed. Crook found his kicking boots again and added the extras.

Of course Crook isn't just a kicker, he can play too and a very well timed delayed pass from him put Jordan Case in for a try. Converted by Crook.

Sam Te'o got his hat trick early in the second half after some slick hands. Crook missed from out wide.

The second half was just as the first, Hornets camped in the All Golds half and it really was a queue for who was going over next - it was Langley for his second after a nice drop off from Dave Llewelyn. Crook was unsuccessful with his kick.

The most bizarre try of the game gave Langley his hat trick after he caught an attempted chip kick. Crook found the middle of the posts this time to add the two.

Dave Llewelyn was next to cross the line to put Hornets a massive 60 points to nil in front.

With a quarter of an hour still to play, three figures was looking a possibility, however, a rare mistake in the Hornets defence finally let All Golds in, and their relief in getting on the scoreboard was palpable; though they missed the conversion attempt at least they had something to show for their efforts.

Normal service was soon resumed and from the kick off Crook went over after a break from a beautiful one-handed pass from Tilly. Crook was also on target with the kick.

The final try of the game came with five minutes left on the clock when a short pop pass from Ryan Millard put Dave Llewelyn in for his second. Crook slotted over the conversion.
