Hornets get behind Springhill Hospice 'Go Green' campaign

Date published: 12 May 2014

Rochdale Hornets are getting behind the Springhill Hospice 'Go Green' campaign this weekend as they take to the field against Halifax on Sunday 18 May.

Hornets will take on the team formerly known as the Blue Sox sporting 'Green Sox' with their traditional, red, white and blue hooped shirts as they look to help raise funds for a deserving local cause.

The club will also have a half time bucket collection as they join businesses and communities across the borough and beyond doing something green - the Hospices flag ship colour- as they try to raise funds in a unique way.

Rochdale Hornets Chief Executive, Ryan Bradley, commented: "We are really looking forward to supporting Go Green Day. Springhill Hospice do a lot of fantastic work for the people of this borough and they need all of the funding they can get. By wearing green socks for the match we hope to bring awareness of the good work the Hospice does and raise them some money as well."

Hornets mascot 'Hercules' joined 'Springy' from the hospice at Spotland Stadium as Will Purser from Shocka Sports, Heywood, donated the socks to the club.

Will, who earlier this year organised a charity fun run to raise funds for charity, commented: "When Ryan contacted me about supporting go green day we didn’t hesitate. We knew of a few other things going on for Go Green Day and we are always keen to support good causes in any way we can and hope that we can bring the good work of the Hospice to the forefront and raise them some money as well."

The Hornets players have been promoting Go Green Day in recent weeks by wearing promotional t-shirts on match days and will be auctioning off three brand t-shirts following the game against Halifax, which will be signed by the entire squad, as well as a very rare hospice themed shirt Hornets wore in the 2012 season as a one off, to add to the bucket collection totals.

Supporters are encouraged to wear something green to the game and donate towards a great cause.

The auction will take place in the main lounge following the Halifax game and bids can be lodged before the day by emailing info@hornetsrugbyleague.com
