Chris Hough testimonial

Date published: 03 October 2014

‘It was like Super League but a lot slower.’

‘Is he really running or is that a brisk walk.’

‘I always thought Chris Hough was taller than Curly.’

These were just some of the comments from the crowd at the Mayfield Sports Centre last Saturday as the two teams contested the Chris Hough testimonial game.

Houghie had dragged in an assortment of ex pros and young stars plus current super league player Kevin Sinfield.

While Mayfield fielded a well balanced side with players from 16, Zach Hartley, to almost 60, Simon Howe.

“Well he's only in his forties but he plays like a sixty year old,” said Mayfield pro Curly Kershaw.

A spokesperson said: "This was an entertaining game if somewhat light-hearted, just what Houghie wanted for his big day.

"The only winner on the day was rugby league as the lads on view showed again what a great sport this is.

"From the sight of Kershaw aged 53 out pacing Declan Sheridan, 17, time and time again, to Sinfield waiting on the pitch at the end to sign autographs and pose for pictures with the younger fans.

"There was also an unlikely trio on the pitch, probably never repeated any where else, as Hornets' Dave Ramsbottom lined up alongside his wife, Gaynor and his daughter, Keeley, both it must be said had much more pace than Dave ever did.

"Chris was humbled by the turn out and was gracious in his post match speech in the club house, thanking the Mayfield club for hosting the game and turning out a side.

"Also thanking again his testimonial committee for their efforts."
