Ryan Smith signs for Hornets

Rochdale Hornets have secured the services of utility half back Ryan Smith following a trial period with the club.

Smith has impressed for numerous years in the National Conference League for Leigh East, Leigh Miners and last season with Wigan St Patrick's, where he topped the try scoring charts with 35 tries in 25 games.

Smith has toured seven times with amateur international teams, taking in two trips to Australia, Canada, Serbia, Dubai, France and most recently toured South Africa for the second time.

He was set to join up with League rivals North Wales Crusaders but opted to trial with Hornets instead and, following impressive performances against Mayfield and Thatto Heath, has put pen to paper on a one year deal.

“I'm excited to be joining Hornets' commented Smith.

“I have been happy playing amateur throughout the years but my granddad has been pestering me for about five years to turn pro and test myself at a higher level.

“I was happy playing at Pat's and would never have considered leaving if Tol [Hornets coach Ian Talbot] hadn't have rang me up. Richard Owen, Dave Ruddy and Darren Fletcher are top coaches and I was really enjoying my time there but when I came to Hornets it just felt right.

“I know I can do a good job and I’m looking forward to testing myself in the pro ranks”.

Ian Talbot has been immediately impressed with his recruit over pre-season.

“I rang Richard Owen for an opinion on a player he knew and he raved about Ryan Smith.

“Richard was the guy who recommended Tony Suffolk so I know he knows his stuff.

“Ryan has impressed at six and seven and he can also play full back and maybe hooker, so he gives us a number of options and definitely strengthens us as a squad.”

Smith, who is a teacher at West Lancs College during the day, will wear the number 21 shirt which was reserved following the earlier announcement of squad numbers.
