Christmas bins update

Date published: 14 December 2012

Revised arrangements for Christmas kitchen waste collection.

Councillor Dale Mulgrew has had a response from Councillor Martin Burke, cabinet member for Environmental and Operational Services in regard to mounting concern by borough residents over the Christmas and New Year rubbish collections which will see householder’s bins being left un-emptied for up to a month.

We understand that Cllr Burke has told Cllr Mulgrew that food waste can be placed in the food and garden waste bin or the refuse bin, but not in any other recycling bin, due for collection in the first week in January. Unfortunately, this information was not put in the leaflet delivered to households earlier this week outlining the arrangements and a number of householders contacted Rochdale Online to express their concerns.

Hopefully, if the freezing spell continues, the stench of rotting turkey carcasses across the borough may be less intolerable than might otherwise have been expected, although the potential increased hazards from rat and pest infestation remains.

For those householders with access to a car, the only alternative remains to take their rubbish to the recycling sites at Spring Vale in Middleton or Chichester Street in Rochdale. Both sites will be open every day from 8am to 6pm and will be closed on Christmas Day and New Years Day.
