Ring in the New Year in style with an evening of entertainment in Rochdale

Date published: 25 December 2016

Make New Year’s Eve one to remember with two firework displays together with a host of other family entertainment and a dance music stage on The Esplanade.

Two separate displays will light up the sky, one in the afternoon for families and the second at midnight to ring in 2017.

From 2.00pm on Saturday 31 December, The Esplanade will be host to an afternoon of family entertainment for all ages: there will be free children’s funfair rides from 2.00pm to 5.30pm, a children’s fancy dress disco hosted by Revolution 96.2 and marvel at circus performances from Skylight Circus Arts.

Fancy dress is optional, but encouraged, so dress your children up as their favourite superhero and they can have their face painted during the afternoon.

A colourful firework display suitable for children will take place at 5.30pm before an evening affair at 10.00pm so why not make a full day of New Year’s Eve and enjoy a meal out at Rochdale’s finest?

Enjoy gourmet menus just five minutes’ walk away in the heart of Rochdale at La Mancha, Cockadoodlemoo, Flying Horse Hotel or Madison’s.

Don’t forget to return at 10.00pm for the evening affair, featuring sets from Revolution Radio’s breakfast host and ex-Hacienda DJ, Elliott Eastwick. He’ll be joined by Kelly Llorenna, the voice of a stack of dance hits who will be singing live before the second dazzling firework display as Rochdale Town Hall clock chimes midnight for the start of 2017.

Dance diva Kelly’s vocals on N-Trance’s 1995 number two hit ‘Set You Free’ helped make it one of the most memorable club hits of the decade. Her other chart hits include ‘Da Ya Think I'm Sexy’, Flip N Fill’s ‘True Love Never Dies’ ‘Heart of Gold’ and ‘This Time I Know It's For Real.’ In 2008, she was named ‘Dance Artist of the Year’ at the Disco International awards.

There’ll also be a fire-eating display, and the optional theme for the evening for partygoers who really want to get into the spirit is New York fancy dress.

And if that wasn’t enough, the celebrations won’t end there as entertainment continues in the town’s indoor venues, with The Flying Horse Hotel hosting two floors of free entertainment, including rock/pop covers four piece ‘The Tony Marshall Band’ until 1.00am.

The KoKo Kobana Lounge is open from 9.00pm. Prizes for best fancy dress. Free entry until 1.00am.

Councillor Janet Emsley, cabinet member for culture, health and wellbeing at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “New Year’s Eve is always special in Rochdale and again there’s plenty of free entertainment for everyone, so it’s a perfect opportunity to stay local and come into town for a meal and to drink a toast to 2017. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the area, many offering good views of the fireworks.”

Mark Foxley, from Rochdale Town Centre Management, said: “These attractions in Rochdale town centre are another reason to come and celebrate the New Year with us in style. Both firework displays will be amazing, and if you can see the town centre skyline, you will see the fireworks.”

Quality food and drink courtesy of Quirky Catering will be provided on site at both events.
