Letter: Council squandering huge amounts of money whilst services and staff are being cut

Councillor Richard Farnell
Next time Rochdale Council Leader Richard Farnell attempts to blame the government for local services being cut and council staff being made redundant can someone send him a link to your recent articles highlighting how council officers are squandering huge amounts of local taxpayer's money please?
Whilst he has a point about the government cuts, he needs to get the Council's house in order before criticising others - the latest, £60,000 contribution to a quite unbelievably colossal amount of over £700,000 for a website, beggars belief:
Coming as it does after the revelation that the Council paid £350,000 on a rebranding exercise, I ought not to have been so shocked really - it appears par for the course:
I appreciate that councillors do not take these decisions, and that senior council officers do, but councillors should scrutinise such large sums before they are spent - after all, they are the ones who will take the brunt of criticism, and possibly lose their council seats at election time over such things.
The system as it stands is really not fit for purpose, if it was then council services and staff would take priority over vanity projects.
The views expressed are those of the author of the letter and not those of Rochdale Online.
