Letter: Universal Credit will make rough sleeping dramatically worse
Date published: 19 October 2017
I just signed the 38 degrees petition 'We demand for a halt in the roll-out of Universal Credit' and wanted to ask if readers of Rochdale Online could add their name too.
This campaign means a lot to me and the more support we can get behind it, the better chance we have of succeeding.
Greater Manchester Housing Action and many others from the elected Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, the Head of Rochdale Council, Richard Farnell, a wide range of advice, legal, homeless charities, housing associations, church groups, and over a dozen tory backbench MP's have all expressed profound disquiet at the roll-out of digital Universal Credit (UC).
The Government’s plans will continue to replace all means-tested social security benefits and tax credits for those of working age, across Greater Manchester and beyond.
They believe that we should not stand for such wilful ignorance of the impacts of the new system and are urge individuals, groups, organisations, MPs, councillors, landlords and housing associations to stand in solidarity against the Universal Credit roll-out.
Rochdale Online readers can read more about the issue and the serious problems inherent with the Universal Credit roll-out and sign the petition at:
