Letter: Car park at the Rochdale Leisure Centre
Date published: 21 October 2017
Rochdale Leisure Centre
I noted your piece on the car park at the Rochdale Leisure Centre:
What you failed to note was that the car park is full of council staff, parking for free all day, some using the parent and child spaces.
If you visit the site at 7:45am you will see an endless stream of council staff, many from Link4Life and Highways.
I have sent this to Link4Life:
The car parking situation at the Rochdale Leisure Centre has not improved, in fact, it has deteriorated. We now have council staff, without children, parking in the parent and child spaces joining the throng of staff walking towards the council offices.
The lady who took my space when I was ready to leave said that she was just about to return home as she couldn't find a parking space, after circling the car park for 10 minutes, with her disappointed child in tears.
I was surprised to find a notice at the centre threatening sports users with a £60 fine if they park at the rear of the centre, despite the fact that after 10am these are the only free spaces.
This was being discussed by many gym members who were all disgusted with both the notice and situation.
Perhaps if parking enforcement officers were stationed at the centre for a couple of weeks and parking fines issued to the council staff abusing the three-hour free parking we may see the situation improve.
I used to work for Rochdale Council and noted several people who work for Link4Life and Highways using the car park and walking to the council offices.
Obviously, they know that they are safe to park for free all day with no one actively policing the car park.
I trust that action will now be taken rather than the ineffective staff emails that are being ignored.
Perhaps a more in-depth investigation is required.
The views expressed are those of the author of the letter and not those of Rochdale Online.
