Letter: The new Rochdale dictator!

Date published: 14 December 2017

Dear Editor,

I am actually sat in the public gallery observing tonight’s council meeting, and am shocked by the actions of our newly selected council leader.

Faced with a simple question on what action has been taken to reduce the number of councillors, proposed over a year ago as part of the disgraceful increase in councillors' allowances - as yet no action has even begun - Councillor Allen Brett leapt into a tirade of gutter politics and drivel.

He went on to state several times that he refuses to hold debate within the council chamber with democratically elected representatives of the Rochdale people.

Instead, he wants back-room meetings away from public observance and scrutiny. Something he mentioned in answer to numerous questions.

We elect members to represent our views and opinions, to debate these matters with council colleagues and they publicly represent us.

Under Councillor Allen Brett it seems this democratic right is to be withdrawn from Rochdale residents.

Seems we now live in a dictatorship - in real terms we have gone out of the frying pan and into the fire!
