Letter: Celebrating the achievements of the borough in last year's North West in Bloom awards

Date published: 11 January 2018

Dear Editor,

I had the pleasure of being invited by the Mayor of Rochdale, along with many other volunteers from across our borough, to attend a special event hosted at Rochdale Town Hall on Tuesday 9 January.

The purpose of the gathering was to celebrate the achievements of the borough in last years North West in Bloom Awards and to specially recognise all the people who played such a significant part in our best result ever.

This year was the first in which all four of our townships have been represented in the awards and it was brilliant to see Middleton joining Rochdale, Heywood and Pennines, with an incredible first year achievement.

At a time when Rochdale Borough is so often portrayed in the [national] media as a place where everything is going wrong, it is so important to celebrate the things that we do well, and this is certainly one of those opportunities.

As I looked around the room there were people of all ages and from all walks of life. They had come together with a common goal to make our borough a cleaner, greener, more beautiful place to live, work and visit.

It was nice to see that Mark Widdup from Rochdale Council, as well as recognising the year-round work that his team do in municipal areas, paid tribute to the organising committees and all the volunteers, without whom this really would not happen.

Many readers may not realise that the ‘In Bloom’ group in Rochdale, and similarly in other townships, is organised by a very dedicated committee of volunteers.

Many hundreds of hours are given all throughout the year to cultivate and produce a tour which provides a snapshot for RHS judges and shows the best we have to offer.

I have been involved with the Rochdale group since 2010 and over that time we have worked with some incredible projects which have developed to become award winning features in their own right.

Each year when I speak to the RHS judges, whom we have got to know quite well over the years, they are always impressed that in Rochdale Borough we are community led.

So here is to the real champions of the 2017 Rochdale in Bloom Awards, and thank you to all the volunteers and partners that make it possible.

Let us go bigger and better this year and show the country that Rochdale Borough is a blooming great place to live.

Yours,

Councillor Peter Winkler
