Letter: Well done Rochdale Mayor

Herr Rudi Schrade of Schrade Maschinenbau with Rochdale Mayor, Ian Duckworth
I have to write to let you know how impressed a German businessman and entrepreneur visiting us was by the welcome he received from our Rochdale Mayor, Ian Duckworth.
Mr Duckworth really put himself out, going well above and beyond the call of duty to invite my visitor, Herr Rudi Schrade of Schrade Maschinenbau GMBH* to a 'short tour' of the Town Hall. We expected a fifteen minute stroll at best. Instead Mr Duckworth really took the time and trouble to show off this wonderfully atmospheric Victorian edifice in all its glory to us, with many illuminating stories about the history, construction and uses it has served over the past 150 years.
Rudi was amazed that, unbidden, his welcome was so effusive and clearly generously heartfelt - and with a very good smattering of German, too. He was left very pleasantly surprised that the famously friendly nature of northerners reaches right to the highest level of local dignatories. What an example you give. Well done, Ian - and his assistant, Nazam, too.
This is the type of positive civic action which can only hope to win and to retain future business and good relations with our fellow Europeans for Britain in this imminent Brexit period.
It even made me proud to be a local council tax payer.
Rudi's company is a major specialist supplier of small and tiny pistons for thermostats in Mercedes, VW, Ford, Audi and BMW cars - over 20Million a year. They are based in Sonnenbuhl, a small town south of Stuttgart.
We first met purely by chance last Friday, after Rudi and I had been swimming in Rochdale Leisure Centre.
