Letter: Re Councillor Winkler’s letter

Date published: 06 March 2018

Dear Editor,

I feel duty bound to respond to a number of points raised by Conservative Councillor Winkler’s letter (5/03/18) where he criticised the Lib Dem alternative budget proposal at the Council last week.

1.    The Conservatives (the official opposition in Rochdale) chose not to put forward an alternative budget proposal and instead voted for the Labour one. His party is the paid opposition.

2.    Counmillor Winkler, voted for the 34% basic pay rise along with the other Conservatives on the basis that the council structure would be reviewed, including the option to reduce the number of councillors.

3.    We haven’t been called the Liberals since 1988. We are the Liberal Democrats.

4.    Yes, your speculation is correct - as there is a seat to be contested, we are indeed fielding a Lib Dem candidate in Milnrow & Newhey - his name is Dave Bamford. He is a local man of action. Last Thursday night after a 12 hr shift in construction Dave and his colleague spent ninety minutes in a sub- zero blizzards cutting and removing a fallen tree on Smith Hill that neither the Council nor emergency services could get to. He then worked tirelessly through the night helping other community volunteers to take food and drink to stranded motorists on the M62. You may have seen this in the news.

Why not try being the opposition once in a while, or just go join the Labour Party instead.

Councillor Andy Kelly
Liberal Democrat Councillor for Milnrow & Newhey
