Work begins on renovating Carnegie Library building in Castleton

Date published: 24 July 2016

Work on renovation has begun on The Carnegie Library building in Castleton.

Sheila Whitworth, secretary of the Friends of the Carnegie building, says: “It's been a long time coming, and if it wasn't for Nick Crewe it wouldn't be happening.

“Castleton will be indebted to him for a long time.

“We are all looking forward to watching the renovations and seeing the life come back into what was a much loved part of our village life, and will be again now.

“The Friends small contribution to that will be to hold some fundraising events, beginning with a balloon race on Saturday 6 August from 2.00pm to 4.00pm on the green alongside the Carnegie.

“There will be a prize for the person whose balloon travels the farthest, along with a similar prize for the person who finds and returns it. We will also have a tombola stall and some local folk music. Posters will be going up shortly.

“The next event will be an auction sometime in September at Woolworth's Social Club on Gypsy Lane, the date and time has yet to be fixed.

“This will be followed by our usual Lancashire Nite at the Blue Pits Inn on Saturday 26 November, details to be announced later.

“Our last event for the moment will be a quiz night in February, details to be announced later.”

Frank Salt said: “The complete refurbishment of the Carnegie Library is under way. The extreme damage to the building has necessitated the removal of the roof.

“The Friends are very indebted to Mr Crew, a Castleton man, for his rescue of our library.”
