Students’ work on public display

Date published: 13 September 2016

‘Moving Up’, an exhibition showcasing the talents of Hopwood Hall College’s Art and Design students, is on public display at Touchstones Rochdale.

It features a wide variety of work from paintings and drawings through to textiles, ceramics and sculptures.

It’s called ‘Moving Up’, because the artwork celebrates the end of year projects from a selection of students, many of whom are starting university this year.

Art and Design student Nathan Lloyd, 17, from Rochdale, and his class were tasked with creating a final project on the theme of ‘Back to the Future’, a personal project based on the films of the 1980s. Each student had to select their own film and carry out visual research. Nathan selected Robocop.

Level 3 Fine Art students came up with their own themes for their final pieces.

Alex Shaw, 18, from Rochdale, called her piece ‘Me’; “It’s an explanation of family ties and emotions through collaged imagery, surface and colour.” Alex explains, “This is a personal reflection combining techniques and materials that represent my thoughts and feelings.”

Another Fine Art student Danielle Newton, 20, from Middleton, chose ‘Birds’ as her theme; Danielle said: “It’s a study of extinct and non-extinct birds, using sculpture and ceramics to portray the theme.”

The free exhibition is on from now until 12 November in Gallery One at Touchstones Rochdale.
