Young people visit Lancaster Prison and Court

Date published: 13 September 2016

A group of young people visited the Lancaster Prison and Court as part of Deeplish Community Centre’s work with young people under the Greater Manchester’s Police (GMP) Positive Action programme.

The visitors met with police officers and community workers to learn about the criminal justice system and civil laws. They were given a tour of Lancaster Crown Court, which has dealt with criminal matters since the 17th century, and a full tour of the castle including Her Majesty’s Prison.

They were also shown where executions were ordered until the last one in 1910 and had a chance to role play as a historical police officer, prisoner and judge.

The visit was supported by GM Police Sgt Ibbotson who explained about the judicial system in relation to young people, the current policing system in the UK, recruitment and the roles of police, prison and courts.

The project was funded by Greater Manchester’s Police and Crime Commissioners fund. Positive Action aims to keep young people away from anti-social activities by learning new skills and improving their confidence.

Greater Manchester Mayor and Police and Crime Commissioner, Tony Lloyd, said: “This project gives young people the opportunity to get involved in something positive while learning more about different aspects of society, including the criminal justice system.

“I launched the Youth Aspiration Fund to empower our younger generation, develop their confidence and skills, and encourage them to make the right choices in life, so it’s great to see this come to life in Rochdale.”

Sohail Ahmad, Manager of Deeplish Community Centre, said: “We are promoting positive activities to increase young people’s knowledge and skills in the criminal justice system with education outside of school.”
