Hopwood Hall students beat the 'Pyg'

Date published: 22 October 2016

Hopwood Hall college students successfully climbed The Pyg Trail to the summit of Snowdonia as part of their courses.

The challenging climb to the peak of Mount Snowdon acts as a test of the students’ physical and mental strength, endurance and their ability to develop a team ethic when under physical stress.

The test also provides an ideal situation to encourage social bonds and as a result, understand the value of team work and respect for your peers.

The level two group completed the trek in four hours 35 minutes, whilst the level three group took four hours 40 minutes.

Some students even managed a 100m sprint finish at the end of their descent - Callum Angus, Sam Ogden, Theo Vassiliou and Mitchel Titterton dashed to the finish.

Students who took part in the walk said the day was one they wouldn’t forget and that the walk gave them to opportunity to build relationships together they wouldn’t have been able to build in the classroom.

Fabian Marcinkiewicz said: “It was a great day, a real test of character.

“We pulled together as a team and reached the very top of the mountain.

“It’s nice to have these learning opportunities alongside classroom work at Hopwood Hall, I wouldn’t have been able to see this mountain and its beautiful surroundings if not for this activity.”

Programme Manager Mike Bruns said of the challenges facing the students: “The challenge of the Pyg offers students a different style of learning work, allowing students to demonstrate team work, determination and overcome challenges they have never faced before.”
