St Cuthbert's RC High School

Date published: 01 December 2016

The season of Advent began on Sunday. It is a time of waiting and preparing practically but more importantly, spiritually, for the wonderful Feast of Christmas.

Between now and the end of term, our Year 7 form classes will each take part in an Advent service in the chapel during form time.

The chapel looks beautiful in purple candle light and is open every day before school for staff to call in, light a candle, spend a few quiet moments or stay for a short Advent reflection with other members of staff if they wish.

Last week, three of our Year 8 pupils represented St Cuthbert's at a special Mass celebrated by Bishop John at the cathedral to mark the close of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.

Bishop John thanked schools for all they had done to make the Year of Mercy a special time of peace and forgiveness but also challenged pupils that showing mercy to others is work which must continue for the rest of their lives.

The theme of our recent Mission Week at St Cuthbert's was Mercy Begins With Me, which reminded us that we all have a part to play by letting God's mercy shine through everything we do.

This Advent, we all have the perfect opportunity to carry out an act of mercy and love by raising money to support the work of Mary's meals, our Advent charity:  www.marysmeals.org.uk

Year 11 Football News

Year 11s played away at Cardinal Langley in the Catholic Cup. After beating them in the final of the Rochdale cup last year they were aware of Langley's quality.

From the start Cuthbert's were under pressure and it did not help that we were standing off them and allowing them to play. A long clearance down the left wing set Fabio Tavares free and he used great speed to run away from the defence and square for Kelvin Ade-Coker to pass in from six yards out.

Kyle Humphrey nearly scored from the halfway line after returning a clearance with the keeper out of the goal but it bounced past the post. Langley pressed again and despite keeper Jack Kelly's best effort they got their equaliser just before half time.

A superb ball from aged Greaves released Tavares again down the left wing, he had no support, but did not need any as he bore down on goal and slotted past the oncoming keeper. Again we were under pressure but again Tavares was the release. He picked up the ball just outside the box, let it bounce and then drilled it past the helpless keeper.

With us leading 3-1 and no subs Edgar Mupeta hurt his knee and crawled off to leave 10 men to play the last 10 mins. Langley scored another after some poor defending and with the last minute ticking down Humphrey got away with a rash tackle in the box. The referee indicated a corner and when that was cleared he blew for full time.

LINC News

This week we welcomed class 5V from St. Vincent’s to the LINC (Learning & Innovation Centre). The students were extremely creative and loved being able to make their own individual leaflets all about the wonderful events and activities that go on at school. Mrs McGrail and her classes have been taking part in the creative media sessions for a number of years and today most certainly did not disappoint. Staff were commenting on how professional the promotional items looked and were keen to display them back at school. We look forward to our final Year 5 session where digital imagery, music, sounds and videos will be created to make some digital signage and website adverts.

In Computer Science KS4 pupils have been responding well to the practical challenge being introduced into lessons. Pupils have to use coding alongside a real life scenario to help them develop their understanding of the topic.
