Whitworth Students Conquer Pendle Hill

Date published: 02 December 2016

An entire year group has taken its school motto ‘Climbing Higher’ to new levels completing a four-hour trip up Pendle Hill.

All of the 130 Year 7 students at Whitworth Community High School were accompanied by Head of PE Will Cawley and other teaching staff as they scaled the 1,830ft hill.

Mr Cawley said: “Some of the students had never been to the hill, some had never climbed a hill and some did not know where it was.

“We started at Barley car park and headed up Pendle Hill then across the top before returning to Barley.”

Each of the five forms was given a trackable geocache travel bug, which was left in a hidden cache on the hill.

The forms are having a competition to see which bug travels bug the furthest by the end of the academic year.

All the bugs all have a unique number and anyone finding the cache and taking the bug is urged to relocate it elsewhere and log its reference number on the geocaching website.

Mr Cawley said: “Most of the days we had good weather, but on one day we could only see 50m in front of us so when we got to the top there was nothing to see.

“On another the cloud was lying in the valley bottom so when we got to the top the students were above the cloud and could see across to the hills on the other side but not down.

“The students have learnt about geography, clouds and maths as well as hard physical exercise.

“Some of the students showed leadership skills and they all got to know each other better. They also got to work together as a group to all get to the top.”
