Mike Lovell’s Six in a Bar are Jazz on a Sunday Band of the Year

Date published: 15 January 2017

2017 opened in some style with the distribution of silverware in front of a sizeable gathering at Rochdale Jazz Club’s Castleton headquarters.

Established in 2008 to mark the passing of long time Jazz on a Sunday stalwart Harry Cameron, Rochdale Jazz Club’s Band of the Year trophy for 2015-16 went to Fleetwood-based Mike Lovell and his Six in a Bar Classic Jazz Band.

Harry’s brother-in-law Bob Cavanagh made the presentation to leader Mike on trombone, Phil Lucas (trumpet), Chris Howse (banjo and guitar), Colin Turner (bass saxophone) and Pete Eddowes on drums. Regular reeds player Willy Entwistle had been prevented from attending due to a chest infection but Andy Wallace deputised splendidly.

Traditional jazz performances continue apace at the New Town National Club in Nixon Street and no fewer than twenty-eight of the very best traditional jazz bands are scheduled to visit during the year.

With the odd exception gigs are held fortnightly on a Sunday from 8.00 to 11.00pm. Doors open at 7.15pm. Admission is £7 and ample parking is available immediately adjacent to the club and nearby.
