Danielle Sheerin planning skydive in memory of Josh McCormack

Date published: 16 January 2017

Danielle Sheerin is planning a charity skydive in memory of Joshua McCormack, the young boy from Whitworth who died last week after a long battle with brain cancer.

Since news of Josh’s death emerged on Friday (13 January), tributes have flooded in to his parents Nicola and Kevin. A candlelit vigil was held on Friday night outside Rochdale Town Hall, while an appeal has already raised over £1,000 towards the cost of Josh’s funeral.

Now, family friend Danielle is planning an 11,000ft skydive to raise money for Josh’s parents and Derian House, the hospice that cared for Josh and his family.

Mrs Sheerin said: “Josh’s mum and dad are friends of mine, and Josh touched the hearts of so many people with his bravery.

“I started the idea a couple of months ago, and I’ve not seen anyone do something like this for charity before. I don’t even like flying so a skydive will be tough, but my fears don’t compare at all to what the family have been through.”

Nursery nurse Danielle said she has also had support from Rochdale AFC, in the from of two match day tickets for any upcoming fixture. The club made headlines when they selected Josh McCormack as a substitute for the fixture against Hartlepool in November. The club has also retired Josh’s shirt number 55.

The tickets will be the prize for a ‘Bonus Ball’ competition that Danielle is running. She added: “This little competition will cover the cost of the skydive. Now anything I raise from that will all be split between Kevin and Nicola and Derian House.

“I have a target of £500 and then anything over that will be a bonus.

“Kevin and Nicola have been unable to work for over a year, and I know Derian House have been amazing with Josh and his family.”

Danielle has booked her skydive for Saturday 29 April.
