Rochdale Rotary Club gives £9,000 to good causes

Date published: 21 February 2017

Rochdale Rotary Club has supported three worthwhile causes with donations totaling £9,000 recently.

President John Holder handed over a cheque for £4,000 to Elaine Royds, secretary of the Rochdale Cricket Development Group.

Elaine said: “As a result of the money we have received over the past four years we have been able to provide our young Rochdale cricketers with much needed coaching and new facilities. Our young boys and girls have improved tremendously and this new money will help to continue the excellent progress made so far.”

The money was raised at the Jonathan Agnew sportsman’s dinner.

A cheque for £1,000 was given to Kathy Thomas, chief executive of Rochdale Connections Trust.

Kathy said: “We are so pleased to receive further funding from the Rotary Club, who have supported us generously over the years.

"We continue to help disaffected young people in Rochdale to get back into a meaningful life.”

This money was raised at the Bank Art Gallery in Castleton where Geoff Butterworth is local watercolour artist in residence.

A cheque for £4,000 was given to the Christie hospital to fund their mobile chemotherapy unit. This is a mobile caravan which comes to Tesco Silk Street every Monday. The service has specialised nursing staff able to provide the latest chemotherapy treatments for localcancer sufferers.

Rotary Past President Irene Davidson said: "After the club raised money from the Geoff Butterworth pop up shop and other events, a great way to ensure the money was used locally was to fund the mobile chemotherapy unit. People can get life saving treatment without the long tiring journey to hospital and back."
