Petition launched to save Coronation Lodge in Newhey

Date published: 19 October 2017

A petition has been launched to save Newhey’s beloved Coronation Lodge.

The fishing lodge behind Shaw Road is understood to have recently been purchased and filled in partially without any planning permission, prompting uproar from local residents and councillors, who sprung into action.

Many residents reported sightings of protected breeds, such as newts, toads and bats, at the lodge, which has been part of Newhey for more than 100 years with many still enjoying its use.

Works are believed to have temporarily halted whilst planning permission is sought.

Councillor Irene Davidson said: "Newhey has lost most of a very important part of its history; the small part that is left needs - and will be - protected from anyone who tries to destroy it. We need to get together and make sure it is still there for future children to enjoy the way we have in the past."

The petition, launched by the Liberal Democrats, outlines how it “will be used to demonstrate the importance of the site and to support the protection of the remaining lodge when shown to the Planning Officers and the Environment Agency".
