Traffic survey for Rooley Moor Road

A traffic survey to improve safety will take place on Rooley Moor Road in Rochdale later this year.

The survey on Rooley Moor Road, requested by Councillor Biant in January, was listed at the Rochdale Township Action and Resources meeting on 16 March and aims to identify potential locations along the length of the road for new waiting restrictions.

Due to ‘indiscriminate parking’, flow of traffic and visibility at junctions and bends is affected.

Local resident Mick Coats said: “I am concerned about this. The only outcome of the survey will be additional restrictions on parking and waiting. This does not address the problem of safety.

“The issue is cars going too fast on Rooley Moor Road. More restrictions on parking and waiting will enable cars to go even quicker, as they will have less need to slow down, as they do now for parked and stopped cars. Even bits and pieces of yellow lines is likely to make things worse for visibility on corners.

“It is not going to improve safety, so why spend £4,500 on this?”

Mark Widdup, director of neighbourhoods at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “We are undertaking a parking review on Rooley Moor Road after being contacted by residents and ward councillors who are concerned about inappropriate and potentially dangerous parking in the area.

“Our highways engineers will visit the site to assess the situation and then develop a proposal to address the issues, which may include parking restrictions at some locations. Once developed, which we expect to be later this year, this proposal will be advertised to the public via notices in the local area and in the local press.

“Members of the public will then have a 21-day period to feed in their views. Any representations made will then be considered by Rochdale Township Committee who will then decide whether to implement, amend or withdraw the proposals.”
