Littleborough woman raises £759 in memory of Joshua McCormack

A Littleborough woman has raised a staggering £759 towards children’s cancer research in memory of Joshua McCormack.

Nicknamed ‘Whitworth’s Superhero,’ five-year-old Josh touched the hearts of many, with thousands of people following his courageous fight. Sadly, he lost his long battle with a cancerous brain tumour in January 2017, then the only child of his parents, Kevin and Nicola McCormack.

Vickie Mason, from Littleborough, originally aimed to raise £600 by completing six different challenges in memory of the brave little boy.

To date, she has completed Dry January and the 10k Great Manchester Run to smash her target for Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research, a Salford-based charity that funds and manages research into new and improved treatments for children with cancer, the leading cause of children’s death in the UK.

Former Littleborough Ladies Circle chairwoman Vickie completed the gruelling 10km run on Sunday 20 May in sweltering temperatures to finish the race in 01:32:13. She is yet to determine what her next challenges will be.

She said: “During my run I was inspired to think of all those who were not able to be here today. I chose to raise money in memory of Joshua McCormack after speaking with his mum, Nicola. She suggested raising money for Kidscan in supporting the work to prolong the lives of children with cancer. Josh had a rare brain tumour and sadly passed away before his sixth birthday. He was a super hero and even attended many fundraising events whilst being treated.

“I want to say a special thanks to all the ladies in Littleborough Ladies Circle as well as all the ladies attending the area 35 handover hosted at Springhill tea rooms in Rochdale on Sunday 13 May. We raised over £140 on this day alone on the raffle.

“I also want to thank my lovely partner and best friend Will, and my gorgeous son for all the support and encouragement over the last few years.”

The McCormacks have since had a second child, Josh’s longed-for sibling, named Zachary Joshua, in honour of his brave big brother.
