Sudden junctions update
Date published: 03/01/2008
All lanes are now open at the Silk Street roundabout. The footpath next to the sub-station on Silk Street will remain closed, with a temporary diversion in place. This is necessary until the 9th January, when the electricity cable diversion work is expected to be complete.
Minor traffic restrictions and a footpath closure are required on the link road between Manchester Old Road and Manchester Road, during cable diversion works.
A lane closure is in operation on Edinburgh Way (inbound) to facilitate the construction of the new lane and footpath. Two lanes will be maintained on the approach to the junction.
The section of Manchester Road between the two roundabouts is reduced to one lane westbound, and two lanes eastbound. This is to facilitate the recreation of the central reserve, and is expected to be ongoing for two weeks.
The layout of the junction has now been changed where Manchester Road meets Edinburgh Way and Roch Valley Way. This will operate as a smaller roundabout until the signalised junction is completed, to allow for the construction of the remaining traffic islands around the junction.
The next stage of the Manchester Road / Roch Valley Way / Edinburgh Way junction improvement works involves resurfacing the roads, as the surfaces require levelling where the roundabouts have been removed. As part of this work it is necessary to partially close the junction for six weekends from 15th February 2008. Roch Valley Way and Edinburgh Way will be closed on the approach to the junction from 9pm Friday to 9pm Sunday on each weekend. Manchester Road will be kept open to traffic travelling in both directions, with a contra-flow system in operation. The dedicated left-turn lane on the A621M will be open for site access only.
Access to local properties and businesses will be maintained at all times; any vehicles wishing to access Aldi and RRG will be required to follow a diversion. Necessary diversion routes will be publicised on this website and via information leaflets throughout Rochdale in advance of the works. Satellite Navigation Systems and online route planning resources will also be updated to include details of the closures.
The decision to partially close the junction has only been taken after careful consideration. This solution ensures that local residents will not be disturbed by long periods of night time working; the completion date is brought forward as weekend working was not previously scheduled to take place; and road users are not adversely affected during the peak rush hour periods. The workforce and machinery used during these final stages will be doubled, and it is intended to work day and night throughout the weekend closures. By diverting the traffic and keeping road users fully informed, any disturbance will be kept to a minimum.
Delays are expected so please allow extra time for your journey.
