Park friends bid to restore iconic fountain

The friends of Broadfield Park are appealing for help to restore a piece of forgotten history.

The group are bidding for lottery funding to bring an old drinking fountain back in working order, and are hoping for as much public support as possible to help make it happen.

The historic fountain was an iconic piece of heritage which had four stone lions which sat on each of the four plinths, and it provided fresh drinking water at a time when few homes had their own supply.

Over the last century it has disintegrated into a nonentity, and two of the lions were stolen in the 1980s, but the group are determined to bring it back to life in a fresh new refurbishment.

Park Warden Bob Bevan said: “We are all working together to put the application together to the Lottery Fund, it is a vital part of our heritage.
“It is so important to us to have local support, as this helps prove its importance and increases the chance of us being grated the money to restore it”.
