Rochdale students raise £500 for Earthquake victims
Date published: 01/11/2005
Students at Hopwood Hall College got together last week and decided to raise money for the recent earthquake disaster in Pakistan. Students Mudaser Khan and Waqaar Ahmed teamed up with friends from their A-level Politics, Religion and Islamic Studies course after discussing the terrible effects of the earthquake with each other in class.
Mudaser and Waqaar, who both live in Rochdale, went around the college’s campuses collecting money in buckets whilst at the same time talking to others about the disaster to make them more aware of the situation in Pakistan. At the final count they found they had raised over £500. The money has now been donated to the crisis fund.
Mudaser says ‘After watching the coverage of the earthquake on TV and reading about it in the papers, we wanted to help in some way. When talking to our course mates, we came up with the idea of raising money. We are happy that other students and staff were willing to donate their money to helping the people affected by this devastating event.’
Paul Wimpeney, Head of the Centre for Academic Studies at Hopwood said: ‘I am extremely proud of the students for coming up with such a great idea. The people of Pakistan have endured such a terrible disaster; it is very thoughtful that our students have responded by fundraising in order to help them.’
