World’s biggest bike in Rochdale

Date published: 08/11/2005

Sunday 6 November saw the world’s biggest bike arriving in Rochdale in aid of the Springhill Hospice Building on Friendship Appeal. From all around Rochdale teams joined forces to take part in a 6km ride that began at the Litten Tree Pub, Town Hall Square.

The teams that took part were Springhill Hospice Harriers, Fitness First, Woodside Medical Centre, the Waggon Inn Loonies and the Litten Tree who hosted the event on the day and provided free drinks for all team members. The Deputy Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Jean Hornby and Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Christine Power joined in to mark the start of the event and as the weather cleared, the teams were off.

Leyla Nejad, Community Fundraiser at Springhill said, “Originally we had ordered the second largest bike in the world for the event but the night before, it broke down! What we ended up with was a 25 seater, which we worried we could never fill. Despite the rain, hundreds of people turned up to support us and everyone joined in to help each other. We really need to thank the Litten Tree for going out of their way to make the day such a success! The School Reunion theme was so popular and we couldn’t have done it without them! ”

The competition will be judged by the amount of sponsorship money raised by each team as a whole and by the individual that raises the most.  The results will be calculated over the next few weeks and the Springhill Sponsored Spokes award evening will be held on Monday 5 December at 7.00pm, at the Litten Tree. Each member of the team that raises the most amount of money will win a bottle of wine, a box of chocolates and their team name displayed upon a plaque on the Friendship Wall at the Hospice. The individual that raises the most will win a travel voucher courtesy of Althams Travel.
