Rochdale hails best ever GCSE results

Date published: 19/01/2006

The achievement of GCSE students in Rochdale borough has been confirmed this week, as the Government publishes its final 'Achievement and Attainment Tables'.

The tables confirm that results in Rochdale saw the highest ever number of pupils achieve 5 or more grade A* to C.

In the last three years, GCSE performance in the borough has outstripped the national average, rising by 9.1 percentage points compared to 4.7 nationally, and significant improvements have been seen across many schools.

Since the tables were first published in1992, the level has almost doubled to 49.2%.

The Department for Education and Skills publishes the final tables following all appeals by students over the grades they achieve. In 2005, schools in the borough achieved exceptional results not only at GCSE, but also at Key Stages 2 and 3.

Head of Schools Service, Sue Brown said, "The statistics make impressive reading for the borough's schools, but they are about much more than numbers. The results mean that our young people are pushing ahead to reach their potential, which can only be good news for the future of the borough".

"With so many of our young people achieving the higher levels, more opportunities are open for their continuing success.  Congratulations must go to pupils, staff and Governors for their determination to succeed, along with the support and encouragement of Rochdale's parents."
