Police appeal following armed robbery in Heywood

Date published: 24/03/2006

Police are appealing for witnesses after an armed robbery on a security van in Heywood on Thursday 23 March.

At approximately 9.45am, a security van was at Heap Bridge petrol station on Bury New Road in Heywood.

As two members of staff were transferring cash boxes from the van, one of them was hit on his helmet with a brick, causing him to fall to the ground.

The three offenders then threatened to hurt the guard, and forced the man's colleague to hand over further cash boxes.

The men then got into a black Skoda Octavia car, which is thought to have been driven by a fourth man, and then left the scene.

The car, which had been reported stolen, was later found abandoned on Water Street in Middleton.

The security guards were not injured and no firearms were seen. A substantial quantity of cash was stolen during the robbery.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact CID at Rochdale on 0161 856 8581 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
