Rochdale Woman of the Year 2006 - Carol Cadwallader
Date published: 27/04/2006
Rochdale’s ‘Woman of the Year’ for 2006 was announced at the prestigious ‘Woman of Rochdale’ Luncheon in the Grand Hall of Rochdale Town Hall on Wednesday 26 April.
Rochdale 'Woman of the Year 2006' is Carol Cadwallader of the Spring Inn, Broad Lane.
Carol was chosen because she organises a charitable event at the Spring Inn every week of the year and never tires of thinking up weird and wonderful ways to raise money. In the past ten years she has raised around £80,000 for a variety of local causes through these weekly events.
Speaking to Rochdale Online after the presentation, Carol said: "I am absolutely stunned to have won."
She added: "There are a lot of people with disabilities and live-in carers around the local area, so we have tried to make them feel they can visit the pub. Staff members have taken a sign-language course and we now have a speaking menu system. We also allocate a personal waitress to parties who don't want to come in with carers, to help make their visit manageable and enjoyable."
Spring Inn sends every new local resident a welcome letter, newsletter and complimentary drinks voucher, which Carol says has never gone unclaimed, she says, "It's a real ice breaker for newcomers and helps them settle into the local community more easily."
Ian Jenkins, Springhill Hospice Fundraising Manager, commenting on the day said: "The Luncheon went very well and thanks are due the staff at the Town Hall for their efficient service. The highlight of the day was obviously Carol receiving her award, she is a very worthy winner of this prestigious title."
The guest speaker was Trisha Stewart, famous – or should that be infamous! - for the ‘alternative’ Women’s Institute’s 1999 calendar that, in turn, spawned the highly successful film, ‘Calendar Girls’.
Ian Jenkins added: "Trisha was superb, she is excellent and entertaining speaker and was very well received."
Trisha told Rochdale Online that she will be launching a new calendar for 2007 in aid of Leukaemia Research and it will be available from:
The Woman of the Year Luncheon is held annually and honours the lady who, initially through public nominations and then by final analysis by the ‘Women of Rochdale’ Committee, is considered to have contributed the most to the community of Rochdale.
