Two killed in M62 motorway collision

Date published: 03/08/2008

Two people have died after their car was involved in a collision on the M62 this morning.

The westbound carriageway has been closed at the scene while inquiries into how the collision happened are carried out.

At 5.50am today, Sunday 3 August 2008, police received a report that an Audi Quattro was seen driving at high speeds along the westbound section of the motorway at junction 20.

A short time later, just after Birch Services, the Audi was involved in a collision with a Fiat Punto.

All three occupants of the Punto, a man and a woman in their 40s, and a teenaged boy, were taken to hospital critically injured.

Since then the man and the boy have died from the injuries they sustained. The woman is described as being in a serious but stable condition.

It is not believed anyone else was seriously injured in the collision.

A large portion of the M62 westbound has been closed between junctions 19 and 20 at the scene of the incident.

It is expected to remain closed for some time, and motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, and remains in police custody for questioning.

Inquiries are ongoing, but anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact police on 0161 872 5050 as soon as possible.

Turns out the driver of the Audi was over the legal limit for alcohol as well as breaking the speed limit.
I hope he is dealt a custodial sentence.
Sod's law that he is the one who has survived, the other remaining victim is still critical.
The family was on their way to Manchester Airport for their holiday flight to the USA.
