New arrangements for bulky waste collection

Rochdale Council is to introduce a revised free ‘bulky’ waste collection scheme from later this month. The new system, which takes effect on Monday 22 September 2008, will mean that every household in town can have one free collection of up to five non-electrical large household items per financial year (April to March).

Under the current system there is no limit on the number of large item collections per household, and the scheme also includes collection of electrical items. The change is being made to ensure that residents get the best possible service from the council and don’t have to wait too long for their items to be picked up.

Also from 22 September, a new charge of £20 will be introduced for the collection of up to five small electrical items, which includes televisions, hi-fis, and microwaves.

The collection of larger electrical products, such as cookers, fridges and freezers, will be charged at £20 per item.

With manufacturers of electrical items now having to be responsible for collecting them at the end of their life, the council is encouraging residents to use electrical retailers to move bulky old household appliances when new ones are delivered.

John Patterson, one of Rochdale Borough Council’s Executive Directors, said: “The new large item collection service will bring about a much fairer system. It is open to all households in the borough and should meet the needs of most people - the only real change will be felt by people doing full house clearances which will, from 22 September, now attract a charge.”

Residents can request the removal of large household refuse by calling into any of the council’s customer service centres, or by calling 0845 226 1800.
