Transport chiefs back Europe-wide travel event
Date published: 16/09/2008
People across Rochdale are being encouraged to leave their car at home next Monday, as part of a European-wide day of action.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) is supporting In Town Without My Car Day on Monday 22 September, which this year has the theme ‘Clean Air For All’.
And anyone who ditches their car for the day, or who has already made the switch to public transport, could be in with a chance of winning a Brompton folding bike – ideal for taking on the bus, train or tram.
Councillor Matt Colledge, Chairman of GMPTA, said: “Every year, more and more people choose to travel by public transport. I hope that In Town Without My Car Day will encourage even more to give it a go.
“Together with the bus, train and tram operators, we are always striving to provide the best possible level of service for Greater Manchester. I’m sure many people will be pleasantly surprised if they choose to get into the spirit of this event.”
GMPTA Vice Chairman, Councillor Keith Whitmore, who is also Leader of the UK Delegation to the Congress of the Council of Europe, added: “Towns and cities across Europe are taking part in this day of action and there will be events taking place in Greater Manchester.
“Public transport can offer a real alternative to the car for many everyday journeys. I hope it will encourage people to think twice about their transport choices and the impact they have on the environment.”

Great idea but no use to me as I work in Littleborough in the mornings then have about 20 minutes to get to my next job in Heywood.
