Rochdale Online launches online Say NO to Ding Quarry petition
Date published: 26/10/2007
Rochdale Online, in conjunction with local protesters, has launched a campaign against Ding Quarry section of the Rochdale Online web site. The campaign is hotting up and thousands of leaflets have been produced and delivered around the area. The campaign was first fought in 1995 but now it's back and this time the campaign will be fought online as well as off-line.
Rochdale Online Managing Director Pauline Journeaux said: "We have been approached by some of the original 1995 protesters, concerned residents and local councillors, since news was published on Rochdale Online that D P Williams Holdings Ltd have put in an application to reopen Ding Quarry, to help reach the people of Rochdale and seek their support in a NON party political campaign against the re-opening of Ding Quarry and we are delighted to help. You can sign up to the 'No to Ding Quarry campaign' using our online petition:
During the summer of 1995, plans to re-open a quarry by D P Williams on Rooley Moor, right on the outskirts of Rochdale looked all set to go ahead. He had been given the right to quarry for stone from the disused Ding Quarry by the Lord of the Manor.
News spread fast, the people of Rochdale were not about to allow hundreds of lorries pass through Rochdale and Rooley moor road, with no fight at all. Momentum spread fast, An Action group was formed.
As soon as D P Williams' lorries were spotted, a huge group of local residents blockaded the cattle grid at Lanehead.
Rochdale Police arrested a few protestors, but this was just the start, through countless meetings, fact finding missions, fund raising activities the backing of Rochdale Council, we were finally able to get Ding Quarry declared a "dormant quarry", this meant DP Williams had to start afresh, and prepare a new planning application for Rochdale Council to get stone from Ding Quarry.
Now, 8 years later, D P Williams are back in Ding Quarry - bore holes have been drilled and D P Williams Holdings Ltd have applied to Rochdale Council to recommence mineral extraction (Application No. 07/D49980).
Stone will be extracted from the Quarry at the rate of up to 750,000 Tonnes a year with the majority of the stone carried in 20 tonne loads over a 48 week year giving rise to an average of around 26 two way traffic movements per hour, 260 movements per day.
Stone extraction will be phased over a total period of some 30 years.
