Date published: 21/09/2007

A ward at Rochdale Infirmary has been closed due to an infestation of cockroaches. The day unit on maternity has been closed, and the children's day unit is being used instead, as a temporary measure whilst the unit is fumigated.

From Friday 21 September the six bedded day case bay will be utilised by maternity for post natal mothers and babies for a temporary period of approximately two weeks whilst the fumigation is undertaken on maternity.

Bay one will be utilised for dental initiative work only.

The play room will be used as a temporary storage area and play therapy will be provided in the ward play area the Play Specialist.

The six bedded day case area will be staffed by the midwives who will continue to provide maternity care and they will use the isolation desk/computer as their base area.

The maternity staff have use of the staff facilities on the unit during their temporary stay on the ward.

Councillor Jean Ashworth, a member of staff at the Infirmary, said she does not think any patients will be moved as a result, although she was aware of a member of the public contacting Councillor Ted Flynn concerned that her daughter was being released too soon after a Caesarian section because of the situation.
