Date published: 18/09/2007
Senior Sergeant, Glen Potter, who heads up the mounted unit in Perth, Australia is spending ten days with the mounted unit at Greater Manchester Police to learn how they support operational policing and neighbourhood policing teams around Manchester.
During his time with the mounted unit, Sergeant Potter will witness front line operational policing by the mounted unit in crime hotspots and attend the Manchester City game this Sunday (23 September), to observe how the team police large scale events such as football matches.
Sergeant Potter said: "It’s a real pleasure to be spending time with the mounted unit here at Greater Manchester Police and it’s very pleasing to see that they really are at the forefront of operational policing in Manchester.
"At Western Australia Police we are currently making a lot of changes within our mounted unit section, similar to those made by Greater Manchester Police in the last few years. It’s been extremely useful to see how the unit here has progressed within that time and to foresee what methods we could be using in Australia a few months down the line."
Chief Inspector Lynn Roby, head of GMP mounted unit said: "The mounted unit at Manchester is considered one of the best in the country and it’s great to be able to share the skills and knowledge that we have gained here with our colleagues from across the globe. We wish Sergeant Potter all the best with the future development of his mounted unit and it has been a delight for him to come and spend time with us."
