Restaurant robbery - appeal for witnesses

Date published: 03/03/2008

Police are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at a Frankie and Benny's restaurant in Rochdale.

At about 10.15pm on Wednesday 27 February 2008, four masked men entered the restaurant on the Sandbrook Retail Park as staff were finishing up for the night.

One of the offenders was carrying a machete and demanded a member of staff open the door to the office. Once inside, the man threatened to attack two women who were in the office unless they handed over money.

The offenders fled with a quantity of cash towards New Barn Lane, where it is believed they got into a car and drove off.

Two customers were still inside at the time but neither they nor any members of staff were physically injured.

The offenders are described as all wearing either masks or balaclavas, dark clothing with hooded tops and gloves.

Detective Constable Dave South, of Rochdale CID, said: "This was a frightening incident for the staff and customers who were inside at the time and luckily no-one was hurt.

"We are following a number of lines of inquiry and I would urge anyone who has information that will help with our investigation to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4646 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
