Ofsted inspectors praise St Cuthbert's High School
Date published: 27/03/2007
St Cuthbert's Roman Catholic High School is good by almost all measures, according to the school inspection body Ofsted.
Out of thirty-eight judgements made by Ofsted inspectors during their recent visit to the school, thirty were good and seven were satisfactory. In their report the inspectors also said, "Students' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding."
Inspectors found that standards are improving in all year groups and should continue to rise.
The report notes that: "leadership and management are good. The headteacher, the senior leadership team and the governing body have established a clear direction for the school and this shows there is good capacity to improve further."
Inspectors also praised the effectiveness and efficiency of the sixth form pointing out the good overall quality of teaching and learning and the students' positive attitude towards the school.
The report noted that: "the quality of care, support and guidance for students of all ages is good."
Students can regularly check their progress and know how well they are doing and how to improve. Parents are also well informed about their children's progress.
The inspectors acknowledged that the curriculum is becoming more flexible and inclusive. There are now alternative courses such as work-related courses at Key Stage 4. At Key Stage 3, dance and drama promote creativity and there is extra help with literacy and numeracy. Higher ability students can take additional courses and students enjoy a rich range of extra-curricular activities.
The report highlights students' personal development and well-being saying that they have good relationships with staff and each other, good behaviour around school and that they feel confident and safe in school.
Headteacher at St Cuthbert's, John Wood said: "This is a very good report and a tribute to the effort and dedication of students, parents, staff and governors. During the inspection, we were proud to show the inspectors the improvements we have already made as well as the firm foundations we have for building an even better future."
