Councillor Mulgrew condemns personal attacks
Date published: 08/02/2007
Balderstone and Kirkholt Councillor Dale Mulgrew has condemned the Leader of the Labour Group on Rochdale Borough Council after he made flippant remarks about his father during a meeting of the Full Council. Dale, came from third place to win a seat in Balderstone and Kirkholt. The jibes came from his Labour Ward Colleague – Councillor Allen Brett who tried to mock Dale about his Father’s act – the legendary comedian Jimmy Cricket.
Dale Mulgrew said: "I do have concerns that Councillor Allen Brett was poking fun at about my father’s act during the meeting but I did not let that put me off raising some of the key issues affecting my Constituents – the rise of crime in the Borough, coupled with the Greater Manchester Police funding crisis.
"I welcomed the fact that the Labour Party supported our assertion that the Labour Government is letting Rochdale down, but I feel that my father’s job shouldn’t come into this. I am incredibly proud of my father’s achievements over a long period of time – but feel that he shouldn’t be brought up in Council meetings.
"Yes, I have a sense of humour but maybe that type of banter is better left out of public meetings where we are discussing increasingly serious issues like crime, health cuts, recycling and the other issues that affect us. Every time Councillor Brett chooses to be flippant he is letting down his Constituents of Balderstone and Kirkholt."
