Date article online: 17/10/2006
Rochdale peace campaigners were very well represented at the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND)’s national conference at the university of Bradford on the 14 and 15 October. They joined calls for an end to the government’s plans to spend £25,000,000,000 on replacing the Trident nuclear missile system and fully supported opposition to the continued existence and spread of nuclear weapons.
George Abendstern, on behalf of Littleborough and District Peace Group successfully moved a resolution calling for campaigning to expose Israel’s large and very dangerous arsenal of nuclear weapons.
Rea Street of Littleborough was re-elected as a vice-chairwoman of CND in the UK and Pat Sanchez of High Peak was re-elected to CD’s national council.
Thomas Gilligan who spoke during two debates emphasised the importance of both young people and members of ethnic minority communities being involved in campaigns against nuclear weapons. "Nuclear weapons threaten all our futures. We all need to oppose them and strive together for a peaceful and nuclear free world", he said.
